About Cancun

Beautiful beach in Cancun

Cancun is a part of the Riviera Maya region, located on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, bordering the Caribbean Sea. It is known around the world as a travel destination with postcard-perfect beaches, ancient Mayan roots, and a lively resort, nightlife, and restaurant scene. Just off the coast of the Riviera Maya lives the world’s second largest barrier reef. Along with Cancun, popular beach and resort destinations of the Riviera Maya include Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Coba.

Cultural Background

Cancun cultural places

The pre-Columbian historical roots of this region run deep. The ancient Mayan civilization once called this beautiful region home, and the traces of their culture and architecture still remain. Visitors to Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya love to explore the archaeological ruins, including Chichen Itza, one of the largest Mayan cities dominated by a pyramid-shaped temple. You and your history-loving guests will also enjoy excursions to Tulum, Ek Balam, and El Meco.

cenote in mexico

Along with its storied past, Cancun features geographical features found nowhere else in the world. The Riviera Maya is known for cenotes: a natural pit that exposes fresh groundwater. Anciently, the cenotes were sacred to the Mayan people, who considered them passageways to the underworld. Today, there are many beautiful and mysterious cenotes to explore in this area. The waters are fresh, cool, and fed by underground rivers and rainwater. Visitors can swim, snorkel, or scuba dive in the refreshing water while exploring otherworldly cave formations.

Weather in Cancun

Beautiful Weather in Cancun

The weather in Cancun makes it a great year-round destination. July and August are the hottest months, with average temperatures in the high 80s. The summer months are also very humid. The winter weather in Cancun sees temperatures in the low 80s, with less humidity. December to April is peak tourist season due to the lower temperatures and mild humidity.

Cancun has two seasons: dry and rainy. The dry season spans from November to April, and with pleasant temperatures and warm waters, is a great time to plan a wedding. May to October is the rainy season, featuring heat and humidity. You can expect plenty of sunshine during these months, as the storms are quick but intense.

Couples should be aware that Cancun’s hurricane season runs from August to November. We recommend planning a wedding in Cancun in any month except September, when rain showers can be expected nearly every afternoon.

Sea Bass Tacos

Cancun is truly a foodie’s paradise, with dishes that combine both the Mayan and Spanish heritage of the Quintana Roo and Yucatan regions. The cuisine takes its flavor from local ingredients including cilantro, oregano, chili peppers, and achiote and chilmole paste.

If you’re looking for local fare, be sure to order the soft and creamy papadzules, spicy cochinita pibil, or huevos motulenos, a Yucatan twist on huevos rancheros. Plus, the fresh seafood is amazing! Foodies will be in gastronomic paradise in Cancun. Some must-try dishes include:
